Flood and Harvest

Wheat harvest started in a hurry this year on Sunday night as the storms passed through Kansas and dropped 10 inches of rain North West of Clay Center in the Courtland area. We started harvesting on Friday night and then we received rain Saturday morning followed by storms over the next two days. The guys hurried to the field on Sunday night to cut all they could before the river came out. It had started to seep into the north end along the river while dad was cutting. They were successful in cutting most of what they knew would flood by morning. This patch is still standing and to saturated to cut still. Dad said it was a weird feeling to be cutting in the dark and you could see the water by you so high.

This is the east side of the field that is planted to beans. If you look at the north end by the electical poles that is the edge of the river. I believe the river comes out at 19 feet there. It was predicted with the rain from Saturday and Sunday that it would reach 23 feet. I did not hear what the height would get to after they received more rain on Sunday night and Monday.

Another view of the field under water.

Weston's first ride of the season with Uncle Jordy and Aunt Dani!
